Scam help

Q. What are scam emails and what can I do about them?

A. Scam emails are email messages that appear to be legitimate but are in fact an attempt to defraud you.

For example, a common scammer trick is to send a cheque for more money than the asking price of an item you are selling, and asking you to refund the balance, only for the cheque they sent to bounce.

Another one that is common at the moment is for the scammer to email you saying they want to buy your item, that they have paid the money into your PayPal account with a bit extra added to ensure that you stop advertising the item and for you to arrange to have it delivered to them. They then say that they have decided to collect the item themselves and could you please refund the extra money. The problem is that you never actually receive any money via PayPal.

Here are some guidelines to help you avoid falling victim to these scammers:
  • Do not send any money to someone who is claiming to want to buy your boat or goods (they should be paying you).
  • Do not respond to suspicious emails these are 99% likely to be a scam.
  • If someone sends you a cheque, wait until is has cleared (not just credited to your account, but actually cleared - check with your bank to confirm this).
  • If someone claims to have paid you via PayPal but you've never heard of PayPal, then you don't have an account and you shouldn't do business with this person.
  • If someone claims to have paid you via PayPal and you do have a PayPal account, don't send the buyer anything until you have confirmed the money has been transferred into your PayPal account.
  • More generally, if someone offers to buy your boat without seeing it, be suspicious.

Q. What does a typical scam email look like?

A. Scam emails come in a variety of forms - here is one that is common at the moment:

“Hi thanks for reply, i am a marine engineer, i am at sea right now. I am buying this for my son as a surprise gift. l will offer you the £30,000 and l only pay through PayPal at the moment as i don't have access to my bank account online(i don't have internet banking with it), but i have it attached to my PayPal account, and this is why i insisted on using PayPal to pay,all i will need is your PayPal money request or email address to (stephenjoo001@gmail.com) to make the payments, and if you don't have a PayPal account yet, you can set one up at www.paypal.com it cant take you less than 3mins to do that, i will be expecting your PayPal email so l can pay. I have a pick up agent that will come for the pick up after payments has been sorted, and also do get back to me with your best offer,i will be...”

Q. How can I recognise a genuine buyer?

A. A genuine buyer...
  • will usually want to talk to you on the phone.
  • will usually want to view the boat or item himself or send a surveyor to view the boat on his behalf.
  • will never send you more money than you ask for.
