New 15m ring netter for Cornish sardine industry Falmouth based marine design consultancy, Pelagic Design Ltd, has just completed the design of a new class of fishing vessel - the PELAGIC 15. Construction of the 15m vessel commenced in January at Padstow Boat Yard in north Cornwall. The design is based on experience gained over 40 years boat of owning and skippering fishing vessels in the south west approaches by Newlyn skipper, Stefan Glinski. Stefan has commissioned this new design for ring netting for sardines off the coast of Cornwall. Stefan provided a carefully thought out design brief based on his experience with his current boat, White Heather, which he has converted and optimised for ring netting for sardines. Pelagic Design developed a new design incorporating Stefan’s ideas and inputs from boat builder Will Claxton of Padstow Boat Yard and John Peters, known for his work at Cygnus Marine. Dan Davy of Pelagic design describes the vessel as an evolution of existing vessels, optimised for efficient ring netting. Of paramount importance is vessel safety and stability across all loading criteria. Using state of the art computer modelling and analysis this vessel exceeds the current over 15 metre stability and loading requirements. The 15m long, 6 m beam, 80 tonnes displacement vessel is constructed to Seafish standards from GRP with aluminium wheelhouse and shelter deck. The vessel features a forward wheelhouse with accommodation below and fish holds amidships. Propulsion is by a keel cooled Man 365hp diesel turning a 1270 mm (50 inch) 5 blade propeller supplied by C&O Engineering through a twin disc MG5114 DC gearbox. Additional machinery includes two auxiliary engines for hydraulic and 240v power and 40 hp bow and stern thrusters driven through the main engine gearbox PTO. The vessel is carefully laid out to maximise space and optimise fishing operations including working the gear and handling the catch. The key is preserving the fish in first class condition to achieve best prices. The catch is stored in iced water in three holds with a 30m3 total capacity. The previously abandoned sardine fishery is making a comeback in Cornwall and consumers are realising the health benefits of this fish. Additionally Cornwall’s sardine fishery has recently passed its Marine Stewardship Council assessment and been certified as sustainable and well-managed. Pelagic Design are confident that the layout can be re-arranged to suit other methods including trawling, gillnetting and potting according to individual preferences. Pelagic Design Ltd is a design consultancy based in Falmouth providing a wide range of marine design services. www.pelagicdesign.co.uk Padstow Boatyard is run by Will Claxton and an experienced team of GRP boat builders specialising in mould and hull construction and fit out of bespoke and production vessels.
